Sir Alastair King Appointed as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London

Sir Alastair King has officially been appointed as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, taking over the role following the retirement of Sir Kenneth Olisa, OBE, on 13 July 2026.

The appointment, announced by the Prime Minister’s Office at 10 Downing Street, marks the beginning of a new chapter in one of the United Kingdom’s most significant ceremonial positions. As Lord-Lieutenant, Sir Alastair will serve as the Sovereign’s personal representative across Greater London, supporting royal engagements and strengthening connections between the Crown and local communities.

Sir Alastair, 57, is widely recognized for his extensive contributions to London’s financial sector and civic life. He served as Lord Mayor of London during the 2024–2025 term, where he championed initiatives aimed at encouraging investment, strengthening community engagement, and promoting the City of London on the global stage.

He is the founder and chair of Naisbitt King Asset Management and played a leading role in developing the Mansion House Accord, an agreement designed to encourage long-term pension investment. The initiative is expected to support around £100 billion in investment by 2030, with approximately half directed toward opportunities within the United Kingdom.

During his tenure as Lord Mayor, Sir Alastair also introduced the City Belonging Networks, bringing together representatives from twelve active community groups to encourage greater inclusion and collaboration across the City.

His public service extends beyond the financial sector. Sir Alastair has represented the Ward of Queenhithe as an Alderman continuously since 1999, reflecting more than two decades of civic leadership within the City of London.

Alongside his civic responsibilities, he currently chairs Birkbeck, University of London, the British Liver Trust, and The Drinking Fountain Association. He also serves as a trustee for the Royal Regiment of Scotland Trust and several charitable organizations connected to the City of London Corporation.

Earlier in his career, Sir Alastair served as Chair of the London Region of the Institute of Directors and as Vice-Chairman of Breast Cancer Haven, further demonstrating his long-standing commitment to business leadership and charitable work.

He lives in London with his wife, Florence, who serves in the Army Reserves.

Sir Alastair succeeds Sir Kenneth Olisa, who has served as Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London with distinction until his retirement. The transition marks the continuation of the office’s longstanding tradition of representing the Monarch while supporting civic, charitable, and community initiatives throughout the capital.
