Keir Starmer Announces Departure as Labour Leader and Sets Out Leadership Transition Plan
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Labour Party leader and outlined the process for selecting a successor, while pledging a smooth transition of power before Parliament reconvenes.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that he will step down as leader of the Labour Party, triggering a process to select his successor and ultimately paving the way for a new prime minister.
In a statement delivered on Tuesday, Starmer said he had accepted the outcome of discussions within the parliamentary Labour Party regarding its future leadership and would leave his position with respect for the decision reached by colleagues.
Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer pointed to a number of policies introduced under his leadership. He cited measures aimed at reducing the use of asylum accommodation, efforts to improve online safety for young people, and initiatives he said contributed to reducing child poverty across the country.
The departing Labour leader also highlighted his government’s work on foreign affairs, including strengthening relationships with European partners, negotiating trade arrangements, and continuing support for Ukraine.
Starmer revealed that he had informed King Charles III of his intention to step aside and would ask Labour’s National Executive Committee to begin the formal process of choosing a new party leader.
Under the proposed timetable, leadership nominations are expected to open on July 9, with the contest concluding before Parliament’s summer break ends. The schedule is intended to ensure a new Labour leader is in place ahead of Parliament’s return in September.
Until a successor is selected, Starmer said he will continue serving as Prime Minister and oversee a smooth transition of power.
Expressing optimism about the future, he said the next Labour leader would inherit a country that is stronger and more equitable than when his administration took office and would be well placed to seek another electoral victory for the party.
Starmer also thanked members of his government, Labour colleagues, civil servants, and public officials for their commitment and service during his tenure.
Concluding his remarks on a personal note, he paid tribute to his wife and family for their support throughout his political career. Looking ahead, Starmer said he was eager to spend more time with his loved ones and focus on family life after leaving office.
His departure marks the latest change in leadership at the top of British politics, making him the sixth prime minister to leave office within the past decade.
